WHAT IS KERNELEMENTE FREE LINK DIRECTORY

Kernelemente is a free online Link Directory, which allows you to submit your links to Facebook Pages, Twitter Accounts and Websites for free. The SEO for the Link Directory (and your links) is done by us. Search Engines will start to index the Link Directory on a regular basis, and your links will start to show up in their databases.

HOW MANY ADS CAN I CREATE

You can create up to five link ads in different categories. This allows you to better target your audience. If you decide to create more than one ad, please keep in mind to create different content for each ad as most Search Engines (especially Google) do not like multiple duplicate content and your links might not get indexed at all.

WHY WOULD I WANT TO SUBMIT MY LINKS

The secret of a good Search Engine Ranking are links. You can never have enough links pointing to your Facebook Page, Twitter or Website. The more links you have pointing back to your sites, the more important Search Engines will assume your sites are and improve your search engine ranking.

DOES THE SUBMISSION TO YOUR DIRECTORY COST ANYTHING

No, our Link Directory will always be free. There are no ads, no hidden cost, no obligation to buy anything. It is simply Free. We know it is hard to believe, but these are the facts.

WILL MY LINK ADS EXPIRE

No, unless you delete or modify your Link Ads, they will never expire.

HOW DO I CREATE LINK ADS

Please go to http://www.kernelemente.com/links and click on “Submit A Link” wherever you find this (red) button. You will be asked to create a free user account with a few basic information (Company, your Name, City, Country …). Once your account was created, you can login to your member area and create up to five link ads in different categories.

DO I NEED TO CREATE ALL FIVE ADS AT ONCE

No, you can come back at any time to create the remaining ads.

HOW CAN I MODIFY MY LINK ADS

You can modify or delete your ads by logging in to your account. Select the ad you have in mind, click on edit, make the changes and click on Submit. If you want to delete the ad, click on edit and select Delete ad at the bottom.

You can never have enough links pointing back to your Facebook Page or Website ! For your search engine optimization campaign to be successful, employing the most effective link building techniques and skills is a must. In fact, link building in SEO has become one of the most important aspects of a successful business online. While using a keyword-rich or quality content can deliver your website at the top of search engine results, there are some other methods that guarantee excellent page ranking.

Link building is a method by which you build backlinks to your website so it can be better indexed in major search engines, including Google and Yahoo. The more backlinks you have, the more traffic your website generates. Building links plays a vital role in your SEO campaign and in the visibility of your website. This, however, depends on the website or the directory where you have submitted your links.

Links that are posted on authority or credible directories tend to have a greater value than those that are posted on ordinary blogs and websites. Similarly, links that are posted on relevant sites are more likely to be recognized by search engines.

Building links may sound easy but it’s not. What makes it a difficult task is the fact that search engines don’t easily recognize artificially-created links. Instead, these engines would go for links from known and quality websites. It is also important to know that search engines have the ability to recognize the difference between a forum signature or blog comments and a website link in an article.

Building your links is also a continuous and a time-consuming process and requires your constant attention and monitoring. In fact, many choose to outsource this important aspect of SEO so they can better concentrate on other important functions of their businesses. Meanwhile, bloggers or webmasters who don’t outsource to a link builder find forum signatures and blog commenting as the easiest ways to build links. These methods, however, is not as effective as the methods that SEO companies offer.

Good SEO companies know how important link building in SEO campaign is. Building your backlinks means improving your presence online and making your website more valuable to many internet users. Outsource your campaign to reputable SEO companies, let them deal with those time consuming and tedious tasks. This gives you time to concentrate more on your business.

There are three things you can do right now that will yield benefits right away, but these tips are really time bombs. What do I mean by that? Keep reading, and all will be explained. These tips are time bombs because they don’t reach a critical mass and “blow up” for you (in a good way) until after a period of time. You will benefit from them now, for sure, but the benefits of these tips build up over time to a tipping point. They seem innocent, but their effect over time is devastatingly effective in what they will do for you. Here they are:

Tip 1: Review Your Bookmarks and Act on It

I know, doesn’t sound like much of a tip, does it? If you’re anything like me, you probably bookmark many interesting things as you surf the web. You have good intentions of following up on those saved bookmarks (whether you use your browser’s bookmarking feature, or Del.icio.us, like I do, doesn’t matter). There is some great stuff in there that you meant to investigate because it would be a good idea to try out a new plugin or web service that you know would keep you ahead of the game.

But… time passes and the bookmarks are just sitting there, doing nothing.

How to Make Bookmarking Really Work for You

Use a task management tool to set up a bi-weekly reminder to review your bookmarks.

Go over the bookmarks you saved over the past couple weeks and investigate them. Look for web pages you saved because they are something you can blog about, or web services that you want to try out for your own benefit, like a new personal home page service.

Spend 30 minutes or more doing this. You will find new tools you will benefit from, or you will find great blog fodder. Either way, 30 minutes every two weeks is something anyone can fit into their schedule.

Time Bomb Benefit
Over time, your knowledge and effective use of tools will build on itself and transport you to the top of your field. All the other bloggers and business owners in your niche will be far behind you in keeping updated on emerging trends and new knowledge. You will have that elusive competitive edge everyone is always after.

Tip 2: Keep Notes and Review Them

Keeping notes is one activity that makes the difference between someone who really knows what they’re doing, and someone who is struggling to stay on top of work. The act of taking just a few seconds at a time to capture information for later use will provide you with amazing returns. And while many people take notes, the secret to making this activity really work for you is to regularly review your notes and then take action.

How to Take Notes like a Pro and Review Them

Get something–or several somethings–in which to take notes. The obvious choice would be a paper notebook, but there are several alternatives, both analog and digital. I use index cards, which I can grab and jot down notes onto. I store them in a card filing box. There are web-based tools you can use, such as Google Notebook, or software-based tools, such as Microsoft OneNote (which is the best tool of its kind I have ever seen).

Some note-taking tools are specialized, such as Highrise, which is an online customer relationship management tool (perfect for small business). Highrise lets you take notes about every interaction you have with a client, and I highly recommend it.

As you read online, listen to audio, watch video, or conduct client calls, take notes. Not only is there nothing wrong with asking a client for a brief pause so you can jot down a note, but it even makes a better impression on her because it shows you are really paying attention. As you consume online or offline media, take notes as things occur to you. Yes, it will take longer to get through material when you do this, but it will dramatically increase your retention and understanding of the material… which is why you’re consuming it in the first place.

Remember how I said to review your bookmarks every other week above? Well, guess what you’re going to do on the weeks you’re not reviewing your bookmarks? That’s, right: review your notes. Every other week, opposite of your bookmarks review, review your notes. Go back over them and look for things you can take action that will yield immediate benefits, like writing a blog post or getting a better handle on a milestone in a client project.

Time Bomb Benefit of Taking and Reviewing Notes
You benefit from this the very first time you review your notes and take action on them, but you grow and take your game to the next level as a blogger and a business person over time. You will advance in your understanding, experience, and skill in all interrelated areas of running your business and using your blog to market it to the world.

You will be amazed at how the simple act of taking notes, reviewing them, and then acting on them will change your life. At some point in the future, a bomb will go off in your mind when you realize just how much you have reaped from this. The important thing to remember about this is that just taking notes is not enough. People already do that. But they might as well not do it, for all they get out of it, because they miss the crucial next steps: reviewing notes and then acting on them.

Tip 3: Keep a Journal and Periodically Review It

Your own personal growth and development is paramount to your ultimate success as a business person and a blogger. You need a way to plan, think, process, invent, and work things out with yourself. You need to have a dialogue with yourself.

One of the most proven ways to do this is to keep a journal. Almost every successful person in history has done this: DaVinci, Edison, Einstein, and many others have kept regular journals. If you want to keep your journal separate from your notes, that’s up to you. It makes sense to some folks to do it all in one notebook or software program. I like to keep mine separated, because the tools for long-form writing aren’t good for taking free-form notes, and vice versa.

As with the other two tips, the key to this one is not just doing it, but reviewing it. Yes, the very act of writing in a journal regularly will give you insights into your life and your work that will be valuable. There is no question about that. But, the real power comes from going back over what you wrote over the last month and comparing now to then. Did you meet your goals? Did that opportunity present itself like you thought it would, and did you act on it? Review your journal entries once per month.

How to Write in a Journal and Get Results

Don’t check your email and social media messages first thing in the morning. Instead, use this valuable creative time to write just for yourself.

You don’t have to write about your business. Write about whatever surfaces in your thoughts, no matter what it is. Do not censor yourself or edit what you write.

Write as much as you normally would for an average (for you) blog post.

Add onto that or write a new entry that is more deliberate, and write about where you are in your plans.

Write about problems you are having and possible solutions to them (work or other, doesn’t matter).

Write about dreams and goals you have, and what you want your life to be like.

Write about how you’re going to reach those dreams and have that life.

Review your journal entries once a month. Look over the past month, see how you did, how you grew, and write a new entry that summarizes the previous month, plus discuss where you’re going next month.

Time Bomb Benefits of Journaling
Like the others, this tip just sneaks up on you until, one day, when you’re reviewing the past month’s notes, you will realize what an indispensable tool journaling has become for you. That realization is the “time bomb.”

Um, Sure, I Do This Regularly

I made up a nice schedule you can follow. Me? Personally, I don’t work that way. But I’m being honest and telling you that’s one part of my own advice I don’t take. And if you’re not someone who operates on a rigid schedule, either, you shouldn’t feel bad. I review my bookmarks, notes, and journal semi-quasi-regularly and I don’t sweat it. I still get the benefits.

Business blogging can be exceptionally rewarding. When done correctly, a successful blog can bring attention to your business, can attract new customers, and can turn your current customer base into the type of fans that companies like Apple, Netflix, and Ben and Jerry’s have: people who will not only buy your product or service, but evangelize it to their peers. Of course, like anything, there is a right way to go about starting a business blog and a wrong way. Creating a blog for your small business isn’t easy; it requires hard work and the ability to think creatively about your work. But if you avoid the five big mistakes laid out in this post, your chances of building a successful business blog will be much better.

Mistake #1: Treating Your Blog Like a Press Center

The number one mistake that business bloggers make is to treat their blog as an extension of their current press center. Repeat after me: Your blog is not the place for press releases. Blogging is a conversation and it offers a way for your customers to connect with your business on a completely new level. Press releases, on the other hand, are the exact opposite. They’re impersonal, they’re self promotional, and most readers don’t trust them. If you use your blog to republish press releases your customers will have no reason to keep reading and they’ll also likely not trust your content.

How to Avoid: First, don’t ever put out a press release on your blog. You can use your blog to make product or other business announcements, but do so with original writing and in a more casual voice. Second, do use your blog to write about things other than your core business. Share your thoughts on your industry, share insights into the day-to-day work life and processes at your company, and provide tips and tricks you have learned during your time in business.

Mistake #2: Not Blogging Regularly

Think about the blogs you read on a regular basis — how many of them publish only sporadically? Most successful blogs put out new content at least a couple of times per week and try to stick to a regular schedule. Consistently putting out quality content will keep readers returning and over time it will help you build a community and turn your customers into fans.

How to Avoid: Blogging regularly isn’t easy, so to avoid burning out, brainstorm editorial ideas ahead of time. If you plan to put out new posts every Tuesday and Friday, for example, try not to start writing Tuesday’s post on Tuesday morning. Get other people at your company involved so that one person isn’t shouldering the entire blogging load, and even consider sourcing content from your customers. Remember that anything can provide fodder for a good blog post, so pay attention to the things you read or see on other blogs, newspapers, magazines, or television.

Mistake #3: Not Enabling Conversation

As I already said, blogging is a conversation, and not allowing it to occur on your blog is a mistake. It’s true that blog comments can open you up to criticism, but blogging is an unparalleled opportunity to connect with your customers. You’ll get a lot more out of blogging if you enable — and even encourage — your customers to respond to what you write.

How to Avoid: Obviously the first thing you need to do is enable commenting on your business blog. But beyond that, you need to remember that the conversation is two-way. Get in there and respond to the comments readers leave on your blog and you’ll be more likely to develop a community around your writing that can help turn your customers into fans who will evangelize your products and services and provide you with quality feedback. You should also participate in the conversation on other blogs in your industry by leaving comments on posts elsewhere around the blogosphere. That will help you to establish your “blogging brand” and bring new readers your way.

Mistake #4: Making New Content Hard to Discover

Your blog won’t be very helpful to readers if they aren’t able to easily find new content. You need to make your blog discoverable and you need to make sure that when you add new content, your regular readers will be able to find it.

How to Avoid: There are a few ways to make sure your blog content is more easily discovered.

- Make your blog easy to find by linking to it prominently from your company’s web site and including your blog’s URL in your email signature, on your business cards, and in sales and marketing collateral.

- Use a full RSS feed (because the goal with most business blogs should be to get read, not boost page views) and make it easy for your readers to find and subscribe to.

- Embrace social media technologies like Twitter and Facebook as a way to notify your fans and followers of new blog content, and make it easy for your readers to share content with each other through social media channels and via email.

- Optimize for search engines by putting relevant keywords in post titles and URL slugs and write about the things that your customers are most likely to be searching for — but avoid sounding artificial simply so you can stuff some more keywords into a post.

Mistake #5: Expecting Too Much, Too Soon

Blogging isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. Your blog won’t be an overnight success, and for the first few months it might feel like you’re writing for no one. It can take time to build up your readership and have a regular community of people who participate on your blog. Don’t expect immediate returns from your blog and do expect to put in a lot of hard work.

How to Avoid: Set attainable goals and realize that you’re in it for the long haul. Don’t cancel your blogging efforts after three months — give it at least a year of regularly putting out quality, original content.

There’s no doubt that a robust and interesting business blog can help a website stand apart from its rivals. It offers a superb reason for customers and potential customers to keep coming back. It also provides a vital platform to keep everyone informed in what’s happening within a business as well as the opportunity to comment on general business trends.

Just one of the ways to do this is by outsourcing your writing. Putting the job in the hands of professional writers, or hiring your own onsite writers, can take a great weight off your mind, especially if you lack confidence in this area. They should also be experts in content marketing, helping to ensure the blog maximizes the number of people it reaches.

If on the other hand you are thinking of writing your own business blog, wanting to refresh a current blog or if you have been asked to contribute to someone else’s business blog, there are a number of key things you need to know to help ensure you get the best from your blogging experience.

Use Your Own Voice

Blogs should be easy to read whatever the subject. Whether it’s a blog dedicated to the surfing community or one for high finance, no one wants to read something that reads like an instruction manual. Of course, don’t be too personal. Remember it is a business blog, so a good rule of thumb is to conduct yourself in the same way you would if you were in the same room as your readers.

Know What Not to Say

Just like any dinner party, don’t stray down the streets labeled politics and religion. By doing so you will run the very significant risk of alienating your audience and prospective clients. However passionate you are about a subject, keep it out of the business arena. After all, you could always start a personal blog to express your opinions.

Edit Your Post

Then edit it again. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a blog post in search of perfection will be a revised post. If you don’t go through what you have written, you will almost certainly find that errors have crept in to your post. Irritating as this is in a personal blog, it can be disastrous in a business blog. Imagine what potential customers will think of your business’s commitment to quality and service if you can’t even be bothered to get the spelling right. A top tip here is to print off what you have written before posting as it is amazing how errors that were hidden can jump off the printed page. Another option: have someone else proofread your posts, a second pair of eyes can help.

Keep Updating

A business blog that is not updated on a regular basis will stagnate and lose readers at an alarming rate. Possibly even more damaging is the perception this will create among potential customers. If they sense a lackadaisical attitude to posts, they will apply this to how they feel about the business. It looks unprofessional and when compared with competitors, who are regularly updating, will do your business’s reputation a great deal of harm. Short regular posts are always better than long infrequent ones.

Keep It Concise

You are not writing the next great American novel. Keep blog posts concise. Readers’ time is limited and their attention spans are notoriously shorter online than they are with physical media. Make your point, pass on information and leave them wanting more. This way, they’ll keep coming back.

By following these top five tips, you should be able to ensure that your business blogging not only offers a productive and interesting source of information for customers, but also helps your business prosper in the future.

If you’re thinking you want to start your own social network, like Facebook or Myspace, then you have to start by asking yourself why you’re doing it. It can seem like a great idea to run a successful social networking site, but to get to that position you need to either have come up with the idea and teamed up with people that could pull it all together, then to be lucky with the marketing, or you need to be able to find a huge wad of cash to throw at the right people.

SO WHY DO YOU WANT TO START A SOCIAL NETWORK SITE?

Maybe you want to start your own social network because it seems like a great way to earn good money – but to get good money you need people to join your new site, and there are quite a few out there, so you need an “edge”. Something unique. Maybe you already have a great group of people, based around an interest or a geographical area and you want to be able to pool that energy and talent – this is always a great reason to start a social network of your own.

SOFTWARE TO START YOUR OWN SOCIAL NETWORK

If you want to start your own social network then you’ll need some software to do it. There are a few routes you could take, depending on what you have in mind, the grand master plan and your time and budget constraints.

GET A CLONE OF FACEBOOK OR MYSPACE

You could, for example, have some written especially for you, by employing a freelancer. Simply advertise that you want a clone of Facebook or Myspace and there’ll be programmers out there that can do it for you. Having software written for you though will be more expensive and riskier. You have to think about who will maintain it, who will support it, who will upgrade it. As Facebook and Myspace have a team of developers working full-time it wouldn’t be long before your version fell behind their functionality and you’d be left in the social networking backwaters.

BESPOKE SOCIAL NETWORK SOFTWARE

The alternative is to have software written that meets your needs exactly. In this way you would be creating your own vision of a social network, that works exactly the way you want it to. You could ditch the things that you don’t like in existing systems and create new functionality. Get a good team of freelancers working for you and you can have what you want, at a price. Although some people might be prepared to collaborate on the project with you for a profit share.

OFF THE SHELF SOCIAL NETWORK SOFTWARE

Another route to take is to get yourself some ready made social networking software, set it up, configure the choices and settings you want, pick a nice look/colours and away you go! You could have started your new social networking site virtually overnight. Software that you can do this with include the following, they all have the usual features you’d expect from a social network, so you need to really check them out and work out which one fits your dream:

1) KICKAPPS

KickApps: this is probably the most professional solution, it’s “white label”, so it really is your look and feel. This works on your own domain name, so it’s totally “yours” from the perspective of your members and visitors. KickApps provide a full API and developer kit and everything else you would need to make it do exactly what you want, so this software is something you can really get your teeth into or hand over to your “development team” to sort out. KickApps offer a free trial so you can sign up and give it a go, test drive the features, get some friends invited to run it through its paces. Over 85,000 sites have so far been built on this platform. It is generally highly regarded and robust.

2) NING

Ning: Ning is probably the most widely known social networking software. Ning is free and really acts as an extension to your website or blog. It integrates nicely with WordPress, Joomla and other content management systems, but there are limits in storage space and bandwidth that you have to be mindful of. You might find the minute it starts to take off, you’ve suddenly got a bigger bill than if you’d stood on your own feet from the start. Update: Note that Ning will not be offering the free version after July 2010.

3) JINITY

Jinity: This is another social networking software solution, but there is no support beyond their support forum. There are two versions, the free version has adverts on it, or you can pay a small monthly fee and have their ads removed. It is designed as a DIY social networking solution, so is probably better suited to more techie types. They try to provide good support and a stable platform, but it does come with no guarantees.

4) SOCIALGO

SocialGo: This British owned company is fairly new to the marketplace. This is a starter level solution and you can have your social networking site up and running in 2 minutes. they operate regular online workshops where you can learn what you’re doing. You can use your own domain and remove all their branding and, of course, charge membership fees if you wish. You can also run your own adverts on the site to generate an income. For those techies among you, there’s an API available too. Overall, if you’re looking for a quick and easy solution, that just works and is supported, SocialGo is proving to be the popular choice!

5) BOONEX

Boonex is free software that gets your social networking site up and running for free. Boonex Community Software is just one programme from a company that has a collection of open source and premium titles for creating community sites and social networking sites. Using Boonex, you can create any type of social network site you want, dating sites, social networks, online clubs, or virtual communities. It’s very flexible. This solution is probably best for developers/people who are comfortable poking about inside php and doing mods though, rather than somebody who just wants a solution that works out of the box. Overall, it has a history of being a bit buggy.

MARKETING YOUR SOCIAL NETWORK SITE

Once you’ve got your social network site up, you’ll find you will have to put most work into marketing it. To come along, people have to know you exist. Think about how you’re going to promote it. Press releases, contacting the newspapers, maybe get onto the Breakfast News or TV. Perhaps you want to do some crazy publicity stunt. But you have to get the message out somewhere. USP: What is your Unique Selling Point? Why should people join your site rather than others? Think about what you’re offering, it has to have something a bit different to the rest. Niche sites are the way to go. A niche could be based on your region or your country – or it could be based on some interest or a grouping of any other demographic. Having a niche and a USP is going to be the reason people choose to join you instead of, or as well as, the more well known sites. I hope the above has helped get you on your route to start your own social network site. Once you’ve worked out what you want to do, how quickly and how much you have to spend on it, then you should be able to find the right solution that fits your needs today and in the future as your site generates a good income for you.

While we have been evaluating in our blog posts the various features available on popular Cloud Computing platforms today, i thought it might be a good idea to understand when and how all this started and look back at where this began and trace some of the key events in the progress of cloud computing. Amazon like all other Internet companies in the period of the dot com bubble were left with large amounts of underutilized computing infrastructure, reports suggest less than 10% of the server infrastructure of many companies were being used. Amazon may have use cloud computing as a way to provide this unused resources as utility computing service when they launched S3 as the first true cloud computing service in March 2006.

1. Launch of Amazon Web Services in July 2002
The initial version of AWS in 2002 was focused more on making information available from Amazon to partners through a web services model with programmatic and developer support and was very focused on Amazon as a retailer. While this set the stage for the next steps the launch of S3 was the true step towards building a cloud platform.
Amazon Press Release

2. S3 Launches in March 2006
Here are some interesting articles on the launch of S3 in 2006. The real breakthrough however was the pricing model for S3 which defined the model of ‘pay-per-use’ which has now become the defacto standard for cloud pricing. Also the launch of S3 really defined the shift of Amazon from being just a retailer to a strong player in the technology space.
Techcrunch Post on S3 on March 14th, 2006
Read Write Web Post on S3 and EC2 on Nov 3rd, 2006
Business Week Article on Jeff Bezos vision on cloud computing on Nov 13th, 2006

3. EC2 Launches in August 2006
EC2 had a much quieter launch in August 2006 but i would think had the bigger impact by making core computing infrastructure available. This completed the loop on enabling a more complete cloud infrastructure being available. In fact at that time analysts had some difficulty in understanding what the big deal is, and thought it looks similar to other hosting services available online only with a different pricing model.
Some interesting articles from that time on the launch:
Technologyevangelist Blog
Virtualization Info

4. Launch of Google App Engine in April 2008
The launch of Google App Engine in 2008 was the entry of the first pure play technology company into the Cloud Computing market. Google a dominant Internet company entering into this market was clearly a major step towards wide spread adoption of cloud computing. As with all their other products they introduced radical pricing models with a free entry level plan and extremely low cost computing and storage services which are currently among the lowest in the market.
Techcrunch post on App Engine Launch
Google App Engine Launch Post

5. Windows Azure launches Beta in Nov 2009
The entry of Microsoft into Cloud Computing is a clear indication of the growth of the space. Microsoft for long has not accepted the Internet and the web as a significant market and has continued to focus on the desktop market for all these years. I think this is a realization that a clear shift is taking place. The launch of Azure is a key event in the history of cloud computing with the largest software company making a small but significant shift to the web.

With more than 112 million blogs available on the internet, there is one question that is essential to the success of your blog. How can you design a blog that will inspire readers to not only browse your blog, but add it to their bookmarks and come back again? The answer to this question starts with creating a professional, unique and interactive blog design. Design can be the key to capturing the attention of readers, as well as providing the elements that will make them want to visit again. Understanding the essentials of blog or weblog design, you will be able to increase traffic and maintain an audience.

The most successful blogger design will usually combine text, images, video, audio and other media related to its topic over a backdrop that is unique and appealing. If designed professionally, the background or frame of your blog design will communicate that your blog is credible and of high quality. Creating a visual theme that reflects your subject gives the blog graphic design added appeal to set you apart from the competition. Web users are highly responsive to a unique, visually appealing graphical type of blog design. With custom blog design, this type of stunning layout is within your reach.

If you browse blog templates, layouts, backgrounds, textures and skins from a variety of sites, you will see the striking difference between standard blog template design and custom design. To help your website blog design rise above the millions of blogs that have standard designs, a custom design is the way to go. Professional blog designers can create your blog exactly how you want it to look. They will be able to incorporate unique graphics, such as logos and a title banner, into a template created for you.

How Should It Look?

A clean, balanced blog design that is user friendly and inviting works best. Readers usually quickly scan blog content before deciding whether to read the entire post. Therefore the layout of your blog web design should make it simple to browse. A clutter-free blog design will not distract from enhancements, such as graphics and video, and enables you to blend interesting images into your blog postings. This helps to break up large blocks of text which can be daunting to readers. Using colorful graphics that work well with your blog posts will also make your blog more interesting and inviting. Using clear fonts and simple formatting such as subtitles, bold and underlined text will also give your postings an easy flow.

What Can You Do to Promote Reader Involvement?

Your blog design should also promote the reader’s involvement in order to hold their interest. Simple to navigate postings with clearly defined categories to organize your posts will make it easier for readers to find the content or topics that are of interest to them. Usually the most recent blog posted is listed at the top of the page, while older blogs can be hard to find as the size of your blog grows. That is why the most successful type of blog design will also feature a listing of the most popular posts in the margin of the layout. A custom design will provide the necessary plug ins that will display a list of popular posts, based on factors such as number of comments or total views.

The capacity for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is another common and beneficial way to promote the reader’s involvement when creating your blog design. A blog is most beneficial if you are able to develop a subscriber base that will look forward to reading your new posts. Perhaps the most important thing you can do to keep blog users involved is by using an RSS feed to inform them with notifications about your new blog headlines. The most effective type of blogger design available will feature this crucial element. This is just one more essential reason to use a custom design, it can provide the link by which users can click to subscribe to your RSS feed.

On Your Way To More Facebook Fans

Facebook went and changed things up, recently switching the “Become a Fan” of a page option to now encouraging people to “Like” a page. People are still technically “fans” of a Facebook page, however — the terminology is just different now.

Everyone wants more Facebook fans — it’s not fun to only have 2 fans of a page. However, getting Facebook fans isn’t always easy if you don’t already have a huge fan base or audience elsewhere. Sure, Techcrunch or Mashable can set up a Facebook Page and have thousands of fans within a few days, if not hours, but their sites, Twitter accounts, and other networks already have a dedicated – and large – following.

So how does the average local business, ecommerce site, or person with a hobby grow their Facebook fan page? Through my own hobby site and then Facebook fan page, I’ve learned a few tricks.

How did I do it? Trial and error. I’ve found the best way to increase the number of Facebook fans is to employ a number of methods, each of which I outline in my free White Paper.

Regardless of whether you are running a simple personal blog or using WordPress as a full-featured corporate content management system (CMS), you should seriously consider adding all of these plugins.

These plugins help you control spam, optimize your site for search engines, track site visits and other metrics, allow you to display related posts throughout your site based on what each user is currently reading, provide a mobile optimized version of your site, allow users to join your site with the existing social networking and/or email ID’s, and more.

1. Add to Any – Add Social Networking Share and Email

This plugin lets you easily add links for your users to share your articles on tons of social networking sites and through email. You can choose to highlight certain social networking sites and then have all the rest under a popup windows.

2. Akismet – Stop Comment SPAM

Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not. You need a WordPress.com API key to use it. You can review the spam it catches under “Comments.”

3. All in One SEO Pack – Optimize Your Site for Search Engines

Out-of-the-box SEO for your WordPress blog.

It allow you to change how the titles of your posts display, can automatically build meta descriptions and keywords based on the assigned categories and/or tags for your posts, and even lets you specifically set the post title, description, and keywords for individual posts or pages. It has some ther nice built-in SEO optimization tweaks as well.

4. Google Integration Toolkit – Track Your Site Visits and Other Valuable Metrics

Integrate Google services (Analytics, Webmaster Tools, etc.) with Your Blog.

This plugin adds the necessary Google Analytics code to your website. If you aren’t using that yet, you need to. Its the most comprehensive offering out there. It provides valuable insight into where your website traffic is coming from, how long people are staying on your site, what they are viewing and clicking on, etc.

It also supports Google Adsense ads, but I’m not using that feature on this site.

5. NuRelm Get Posts – Show Related News Articles on your WordPress Pages

Adds a shortcode tag [get_posts] to display a list of posts.

WordPress doesn’t have the ability to link page hierarchy to news article hierarchy. However, most WordPress sites would benefit from this. Most sites featuring products or services typically have related news categories for each of those products or services. Personal bloggers often do this as well in describing the various things they are passionate about. This is a very simple plugin that lets you specify a list of related posts on each of your pages.

For example, we have a WordPress page for each of our Facebook applications and also a related news category for each. With this plugin we can display related news articles for each individual Facebook application right on that applications feature page.

6. Subscribe To Comments – Let Users Subscribe to Article Comments via Email

Allows readers to receive notifications of new comments that are posted to an entry.

How many times have you gone to a website and commented on something and didn’t bother to go back and see additional comments that were made. This plugin solves that problem by letting your users subscribe to get email notifications when someone else comments on the same article.

7. WordPress.com Popular Posts – Show off your most Popular Articles

Shows the most popular posts, using data collected by WordPress.com stats plugin.

Pretty much all WordPress sites, whether commercial or personal, typically have a handful of articles that are very popular and drive most the traffic to the site. Why not show these articles off to every person that looks at your site? This plugin will let you do just that. On this website, we display popular content in our footer, but you can place it in your sidebar if you want.

8. WordPress.com Stats – Track Site Visits and Other Metrics Without Leaving WordPress

Tracks views, post/page views, referrers, and clicks. Requires a WordPress.com API key.

You might be asking why I’m recommending this after the rave review of Google Analytics above. Well, the reason is because this plugin works right in your WordPress dashboard for immediate viewing of your popular articles, search terms, etc. Its also required for the plugin above that shows popular posts.

9. WordPress Mobile Edition – Optimize your Site for Cell Phones and Touch Phones

Show your mobile visitors a site presentation designed just for them. Rich experience for iPhone, Android, etc. and clean simple formatting for less capable mobile browsers. Cache-friendly with a Carrington-based theme, and progressive enhancement for advanced mobile browsers.

Mobile web browsing is close to exceeding desktop web browsing these days and your full WordPress site will be slow and look like garbage on a cell phone. This particular plugin even shows an optimized version for touch phones, like the iPhone, Blackberry Storm, and Andriod devices.

10. Yet Another Related Posts Plugin

Returns a list of related entries based on a unique algorithm for display on your blog and RSS feeds. A templating feature allows customization of the display.

Its definitely a best-practice to display related articles to the user currently reading one of your articles. The better the matching logic, the more likely the list of articles will be interesting to that reader. This plugin does a great job of matching articles and it also uses a caching system for top performance.

11. Login with Social Networking ID’s – Gigya Socialize or JanRain RPX

Since this article specifically is my list of plugins that I think every WordPress site should have, I’m recommending one of these plugins so that your users don’t need to sign up directly for “yet another site”.

Both of these plugins support logging in with Google, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and tons of other social networking and email sites. Both work quite well and will significantly increase the number of registered users on your site. I prefer the Gigya plugin, but really only because it has more advanced Facebook Connect capability than RPX and lets developers do more with the data should we chose.

If you are using Gigya (or any other plugin that support Facebook Connect features), you can have a nice page that lets users invite their Facebook friends to your site. Its easy to install and won’t tax your server. Please note that RPX does not support true Facebook Connect features, so this won’t work with that.

Future Article: Add Social Networking Capabilities to Your WordPress Site

We will be covering plugins for more full-featured social networking functionality in a separate article. If you are chomping at the bit for this right now, here are a few plugins worth taking a look at:

Facebook Connect WordPress Plugin by Socialable.es

WordPress Facebook Connect Plugin unofficially developed by one of the Facebook Developers

WordPress Multi-User (MU) with BuddyPress – Adds full-on social networking and community features

Mingle – Adds social networking features such as friends and activity streams to your site, but does provide login capability using Facebook or other social network ID’s.

I’m using a pretty heavily modified version of the Sociables.es plugin as it was the most comprehensive framework to start with. I tweaked the main code quite a bit and added full modules for displaying a user’s entire news stream/wall and displaying a list of all of a user’s Facebook friends. I’m trying to work with the developer to roll some of this functionality into his plugin or to work in logic that let’s myself and others add functionality to the plugin.
